Application Information for Confucius Institute Scholarship 2019, Chongqing University

 

For the purpose of cultivating qualified Chinese language teachers, facilitating the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) launches “Confucius Institute Scholarship” (CIS) to support outstanding students, scholars and currently employed Chinese language teachers recommended by Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms as well as some HSK test centers (hereinafter to be collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) to study in Chinese universities and colleges.


Chongqing University (CQU), located in Chongqing Municipality, is a national key university under the direct leadership of Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE). As a host institution for Confucius Institute Scholarship international students, also one of the first cohort of Demonstration universities for quality education of international students in China, which has passed quality accreditation of international student education in China organized by MOE, CQU has received ten thousands of international students from over 140 countries since its first intake of international students in 1980s.


Apart from regular degree study programs, CQU offers 17 English-taught degree programs and various levels of Chinese study programs. Every year, the university organizes a large variety of cultural tours, field visits and extra-curricular activities for international students. The university has also set up HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test), YCT (Youth Chinese Test) and BCT (Business Chinese Test) Test Centers, with BCT being the only one in Chongqing area.

 ELIGIBILITY

 

All applicants shall be:

1.Non-Chinese citizens

2.In good physical and mental condition, well performed both academically and behaviorally

3.Aspired to take future careers on the teaching or international promotion of Chinese language.

4.Between the ages of 16-35 on September 1st, 2019. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not exceed the age limit of 45, while undergraduate students shall not exceed the age limit of 25.

 

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES, FIELDS OF STUDY AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

1.Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

Commences September 2019 and provides scholarship for maximum two academic years. Applicants shall be Bachelor degree holders, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 in HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Applicants who are able to provide notarized document of the employment agreement or related proofs upon completing study in China are preferred.  

 

2.Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

Commences September 2019 and provides scholarship for maximum four academic years. Applicants must have graduated with a high school diploma, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 in HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

 

3.Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

Commences September 2019, and provides scholarship for maximum 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL)


Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score required.

Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy


Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level).

Chinese Language Study


Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 3 level).

 

4.Scholarship for One-Semester Study

Commences either in September 2019 or March 2020, and provides scholarship of maximum 5 months. Applicants withholding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score required.


Fields of study: Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

 

Applicants are advised to log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to choose recommending institution, and select Chongqing University as host institution. Please register, complete the Confucius Institute Scholarships Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

 

The recommending institutions are engaged in the applicant selection, materials review, and collecting and handing over applicantsdocuments to Chongqing University.

Chongqing University will then review the eligibility of applicants, and submit the admission list to Hanban.


Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. The results will be notified three months before enrollment of the admitted students


Scholarship holders need to confirm with Chongqing University to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out CIS certificate online, and register at Chongqing University at the designated date and time as per the letter of admission.

OTHERS

 

Degree students shall accept the annual assessment under the Annual Appraisal Procedures of Confucius Institute Scholarship.

Those who failed to register on time, failed to pass the health assessment, dropped out midway and/or suspended will be deprived of scholarship.

Confucius Institute Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

 

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of Chongqing University to provide teaching and management of scholarship students organizing cultural and social activities, as well as organizing Chinese language proficiency tests. Tuition fee does not cover the textbook expenses and tourist attraction tickets.


Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of Chongqing University to provide students on-campus apartments (usually double rooms). Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from Chongqing University. Students who live off-campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of 700 CNY per person/month paid on a monthly/ quarterly basis from Chongqing University.


Living allowance is granted by Chongqing University on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for undergraduates, one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL student, the monthly allowance is 3,000CNY per person.


Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by Chongqing University in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.

 

Students are required to complete enrollment procedures for every semester within stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarship may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.

During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.

For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by Chongqing University, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by Chongqing University.

 

 

Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarship

 

For all applicants:

A Scanned copy of passport photo page

A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).

A Recommendation letter by the head of the recommending institutions

Other supporting documents (physical examination form and non-criminal record)

 

For degree program applicants:

A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.

Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide a notarized employment agreement with teaching institutions are preferred.

 

Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide the proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employing institution

 

Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of entrustment signed by their legal guardians in China.
